The layered look has gone, and winter is on its way. So how do we survive these months of energy crisis? “Irish woman” has the answer with our exclusive waistcoat in soft autumn colours. Wear it with a narrow skirt, a severe little shirt, and your gayest belt. You’ll be warm and you’ll also be hallmarked “winter fashion 1979”

Materials
13 (14: 15: 16) 25g balls of Hayfield Monique.
1 Pair each of 3 ¼ mm and 4 mm knitting needles.
1 3 ¼ mm circular Twin Pin. 100cm long.

Rep these 2 rows for 2cm, ending with a 2nd row. Change to 4mm needles an cont in patt as folls:
1st row – K1, * P3, K3. Rep from * to last 4 sts. P3, K1.
2nd row – P1, *K3, P3, rep from * to last 4 sts K3, P1.
3rd row – K1, * P3, sl 2 tog.  K1, psso 2, rep from * to last 4 sts,  P3 K1. 77 (77:85:85) sts.
4th row – P1, * K3, P1, rep from * to end.
5th row – K1, * P3, (K1, yfwd), k1) into next st, rep from * to last 4 sts, P3, K1. 133(133:125125) sts.
6th row – as 2nd row
7th and 8th row – as 1st & 2nd rows. 
9th row – K2, P2, tog,  * K1, ( K1, yfwd, K1) into next st, K1, P3, tog, rep form * to last 7 sts K1, (K1, yfwd, K1) into next st, K1, P2 tog K2.
10th row – As First row
11th & 12th row – As second and first row.
13th row – P1,  *sl1 tog, K1, p2sso, P3, rep from *  to last four stitches, sl 2 tog, K1 p2sso, P1.

20TH row – as 2nd row
These 20 rows from the pattern are rep throughout. Rep them 5 times more.
Shape arm holes
Keeping the patt correct throughout, cast off 9(6:9:6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 95(101: 107:113) sts.
Cont in patt work 10 rows, then inc one st at each end of next and every foll 10th row until there are 107(113:119:125) sts. (NOT counting the sts on the 3rd and 5th row or 13th and 15th row) then cont without shaping until armholes measure 23(24:25:26)cm, ending with the wrong side row.
Shape Shoulders 
Cast off 6 sts at beg of next 8 (10:10:10) rows, then 9(6:6:9) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 
Leave rem 41(41:47:47) sts on holder
Left Front 
Pocket Lining
With 4mm needles cast on 27 sts and work in st st for 10cm, ending with a P row and inc on st at each end of last row. 29 sts. Leave sts for the present.
With 3 ¼ mm needles cast on 54(60:60:64) sts
1st row - * K1, P1, rep from * to end. Rep this row for 2cm, ending with a wrong side row and dec on st at end of last row, 53(59:59:65) sts
Change to 4mm needles and cont in patt as on Back until work measures 12cm from beg ending with wrong side row.
Place Pocket
Next row Patt 12(18:18:18), sl next 29 sts on thread, patt across 29 stsof pocked lining , then patt to end. Cont in pat until work measures the same as back armholes, ending with the same patt row.
Shape Armhole and front Edge
Next row cast off 9(12:9:12) patt to last sts, P2 tog. Dec at front edge on every 3rd row 16(16:19:19) times more and AT THE SAME TIME inc at armhole edge on every 10th row 6 times. 33(36:36:39) sts.
Cont without shaping until work measures the same as the back to shoulders, ending with a wrong side row. 
Shape Shoulder
Cast off 6 sts at beg of next and foll 3(4:4:4) alt rows. Work 1 row, then cast off rem 9(6:6:9)sts
Right Front 
Make pocket lining as before
With 3 ¼ mm needles cast on 54(60:60:66) sts.
1st row - * P1, K1 rep from * to end. Rep this row and dec one st at beg of last row, 53(59:59:65)sts
Change to 4mm needles and cont to match left front reversing shaping and position pocket.
Armhole Borders 
Join the shoulder seams.
With 3 ¼ mm needles and right side facing pick up and K approx. 121( 125:129:133) sts round the armhole, BUT NOT across the cast off sts.
Count in K1, P1 rib for 4cm
Cast off in rib
Front Border 
With 3 ¼ Twin Pin and right side facing , start right at the bottom of the right front. Pick up and K approx. 165(168:171:174) sts up right front edge. K back neck sts, pick up and K 165 (168:171:174) sts down left front edge. 37(377:389:395) sts
Cont in K1, P1 rib fir 6cm
Cast off loosely in rib
Pocket tops
S1 the 29 sts from holder on to 3 ¼ mm needles , with right side faceing (P1,K1) into 1st st, (P1, K1) to last 2 sts, P1, (K1, P1) into last st. 31 sts.
Cont in rib for 2cm
Cast off in Rib
To Make up
Do not press. Join side seams. Sew down pocket tops and pocket linings, press seams. Sew edges of armhole borders to cast off sts at armhole, noting that on 2nd & 4th sizes, side seam comes  slightly to the back.
