Welcome to Mayo Federation

The Mayo ICA continues to play an active part in the social and economic life of the county. Today members enjoy sport and leisure activities, arts, crafts, drama, computers, digital photography, jewellery making, music, dancing and languages. Members get together regularly (some weekly and some monthly) at local, county and national level where they make new friends, discover new interests and share ideas.

Mayo History

From records it is known a branch of the United Irishwomen was formed in Ballycroy on the 25th March 1912, branches are also known to have been in existence in Aughagower & Kilmeena that year. In total there have been up to 49 guild in the Mayo federation however at present the number stands at 11.

During the First World War the Society of United Irishwomen collected Sphagnum moss throughout Ireland to make dressing for wounds. Collecting centres were established in Mayo in Achill, Ballina, Ballyglass, Castlebar, Crossmolina, Hollymount, Rosturk, Mulranny and Westport. From there it was taken to depots where it was manufactured into dressings and supplied to hospitals mainly in Ireland, England and France but also as far afield as Italy, Egypt, Palestine and India.

The ICA always welcomes new members so if there is a guild near you ask any member about joining.
