International Women’s Day

#Endgenderbasedviolence

According to the National Women Council of Ireland, to date

256 women have died violently between 1996 and January 2023;
163 women have been killed in their own homes (63%);
87% of women were killed by a man known to them.
13% of women were killed by a stranger, and 1 in every 2 femicide victims is killed by a current or former male intimate partner.

Women of any age can be victims of Femicide. However, women under the age of 35 make up 50% of cases in Ireland. As reported by the National Women Council of Ireland, since Ashling Murphy’s murder, 15 women have been killed just because they were women

ICA is the largest women organisation in Ireland, and has supported women since 1910.

This is why the ICA calls for urgent action. These horrifying figures are more than numbers, they are women and their stories. Beautiful words must be followed by effective and tangible actions to prevent women to be victims of any type of violence.”
